What Causes Eczema – Here’s How to Cure your Eczema

July 12th, 2010

25 weeks 4th baby

What Causes Eczema There are many causes of eczema. There are different things such and dust which create allergic reactions. But for me, the fundamental reason why you suffer with eczema is that you have a weak immune system which needs to be strengthened so it can fight off all manner of diseases including eczema.

If you develop a stronger immune system your body will be able to self heal itself from colds, flu, eczema and all manner of other diseases.

To develop a stronger immune system you need to eliminate all the bad foods and include more of the goods foods.

The bad foods do not deliver much nutrients to the cells. They do not nourish the body and actually can cause you to become overweight.

The good foods cleanse, rejuvenate and nourish the body cells from the inside out. You feel different from within when you eat the right sort of food.

Here is a list of the good foods you should include in your Eczema Diet.

#1 – What Causes Eczema List of Good Foods

To develop your immune system you should eliminate foods that put a burden on your body and bring little nutrition.

The first thing to do is to give up all white flour and foods that contain it. Foods such as cookies, white bread, cakes, etc. When flour lands in the stomach it turns to a sticky paste and is slow to digest. This creates an extra burden on your digestive system.

#2 – The second thing you can do to strengthen your immune system is to eat approximately three cups of bean sprouts with your meals each day. There are various varieties. The most popular ones are Alfalfa and Mung beans. Sprouts are very high in enzymes, vitamins and minerals. They detoxify the body and delivery healthy nutrients to body that suffers with eczema.

#3 – The next thing you should do is to introduce essential fatty acids into your diet on a daily basis. Foods high in essential fatty acids include Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Avocado and Flax seed. Essential Fatty Acid lubricate the body, the skin and the internal organs. This is great for eczema skin.

#4 – The next thing you can do is to drink organic vegetable juice on a daily basis. Raw juice detoxifies the body eliminating toxins and waste products efficiently. Your juice might contain spinach, ginger, cucumber, celery and bean sprouts. Raw juices whether fruit or vegetable are digested by the system within twenty minutes and delivers much needed nutrients.

#5 – Finally, you should introduce more quality foods into your diet. The best foods are 100% raw foods. One meal per day should consist of at least 65% raw ingredients. So 35% could be a piece of grilled chicken. The other 65% can consist of a large salad, vegetables, bean sprouts and seeds. This represents a nutritious and beneficial meal.

There are many causes of eczema. But if you have a strong immune system you will be able to self heal from within without having to rely totally on creams, potions and ointments. By introducing a few new routines into lifestyle you will create a stronger more powerful immune system and heal yourself from a large array of ailments.

Children’s Eczema – Keep the Skin Moisturized

Medication - 365 : 07.16.2009

The exact reasons for eczema remain a puzzle despite all our medical knowledge. Sufferers are aware that they have an allergic reaction to an external substance which brings on the condition. The condition known as baby eczema usually starts with a red rash on the infants face but this gradually gets worse until the skin becomes ridged and cracked. Although the problem is widespread around the world; in the USA as many as 20% of infants will be treated for this complaint at some point.

Fortunately, most of these cases of have cleared up before the child reaches 2 years old. For a small number of children this skin complaint does not disappear when they are young but continues into adulthood. This is primarily a condition suffered by babies and young children although it can affect someone of any age. Unfortunately most people have suffered with this since they were at least 5 years of age but around 33% will have contracted the condition by the time they reached their 1st birthday.

The most common type in babies is atopic eczema and this type of baby eczema is characterized by itching, and red, scaly skin on the scalp, face, arms or legs. Usually hereditary, atopic eczema is often thought to be triggered by a baby’s skin drying out. Often the trigger mechanism is either the detergent or fabric conditioner used to wash the baby’s clothes and this can also be the trigger for the condition in adults as well. It has also discovered that baby eczema was more likely if the mother gave up breastfeeding early which could mean that breast milk may contain something that protects the infant.

Of course we must not neglect some respiratory complaints that can exacerbate the condition. Mothers who have asthma are also more likely to have a baby that has the condition but allergic rhinitis and food allergies can also play a part. Specialists in food allergies believe that up to 3 cases in ten of childhood cases are because the child has a food allergy; discovering the foodstuffs responsible should be a relatively simple matter, which once this is done, can be removed from the diet completely. Removing the guilty foods comes down to trial and error although there are some common foodstuffs that should be looked at first including:

  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Any type meal prepared using eggs
  • Peanuts

Baby eczema can also be caused as a result of the baby receiving antibiotics when the mother gave birth to her child. Treating babies requires a little more thought as they cannot tell us what irritates them so only bath them in lukewarm water and use fragrance free, hypoallergenic creams. Once they have dried, they need to be dressed in soft natural clothing made from cotton. A baby’s nails should be kept short or covered with mittens to prevent itchy skin from becoming further damaged or infected from excessive scratching.

Unfortunately, baby eczema sometimes needs further help and in these cases, the doctor might prescribe the use of antihistamines to relieve the itching; when required it is not uncommon for the child to have steroid cream applied to the affected area but this cannot be done for very long. One thing is certain; this skin disorder is very common, yet remains a difficult form to control and fully overcome.

Eczema: Symptoms and treatment – Part 15

June 5th, 2010

my portable life; take 2.

1. What is Eczema and what are the symptoms?

Eczema is also referred to as Dermatitis, simplified by: inflammation of the skin. Eczema is a treatable condition that involves swelling of the skin, redness, itching, irritation, and dry flaking skin, sometimes resulting in the flesh peeling away. It is considered to be hereditary and occurs either your entire life or at intervals throughout you life. Eczema has also been linked to asthma and allergy problems. There are many types of eczema:

Common forms:

A. Atopic Eczema- rash on the head, scalp, neck, inside elbows, behind knees, and buttocks.

B. Contact Dermatitis- resulting from allergic or irritants, such as poison ivy, nickel, or wet cement.

C. Xerotic Eczema- dry skin from dry weather resulting in eczema.

D. Seborrhoeic- scaling of the scalp and eyebrows.

Less common forms:

A. Dyshidrosis- occurs only on palms, soles, and sides of fingers.

B. Discoid Eczema- often on lower legs, producing dry rash or oozing round spots.

C. Venuous Eczema- occurs in elderly or people with edema, related to circulatory problems.

D. Dermatitis Herpetiformis- intensely itchy, symmetrical rash on arms, thighs, knees and back.

E. Neurodermatitis- localized scratching producing thickened are of eczema.

F. Autoeczematization- reaction with parasites, fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

2. Who is susceptible to Eczema?

Eczema has no age discrepancies and affects people of all ages. When being diagnosed for eczema, doctors look into diet, medication, and family history. Allergens usually are a major cause of inflammation, and tests can be performed to isolate the causes.

3. What treatments are available?

Eczema creams are available to reduce the effects, and control the flaking of the skin and irritation. Medication can also be prescribed to enhance the body’s ability to fight the condition. Singulair is a prescribed form of treatment for eczema that holds promise. This is because Singulair can help prevent allergic reactions and prevent asthma, going straight to the main causes of eczema sufferers.

4. Is there a cure for Eczema?

There are no known cures for eczema, the focus is on controlling the symptoms to alleviate the inflammation and relieve itching. Many people don’t realize they have the symptoms and don’t receive the correct diagnosis.

How to Actually Address Your Eczema? For those suffering from the skin condition of eczema, you may be ready to just scream out for relief. This condition is more than irritating; it can be downright painful at times. But just what is this condition and what are some ways that you can treat it without expensive prescriptions creams and other such ointments?

First, understand that the term eczema is applied to a wide variety of skin conditions. Inflammation of the upper layers of skin, or dermatitis, of virtually any type can fall under the umbrella of what doctors refer to as eczema. Symptoms include not just dryness and redness of the skin, but also swelling, flaking, crusting, cracking, bleeding, blisters, and even oozing of puss. While it’s rare that one gets scars from this condition, there can sometimes be permanent skin discoloration.

There are many different types of eczema, and they all have different causes. This is the key to actually treating your condition once and for all – understanding the root cause of the condition and what is bringing it on. Failure to treat this underlying cause will not bring about any healing, and may actually make the condition much worse than it is.

For example, many cases of eczema are due to exposure to chemicals such as cleaning agents or other such compounds. However, some assume that because the skin is dry and itching then simple hand lotion should clear it up. When they put lotion to skin that is already chafed or irritated due to chemical exposure, they are just adding chemicals on top of top of chemicals; not only will this fail to address the cause of the eczema, it will just make the condition even worse.

Other common reasons for eczema are allergies, whether topical or food allergies; a reaction to a prescription or over the counter medication; a medical condition; family history. You may be able to isolate the reason for your eczema yourself if you’re aware of these common causes. Do you work in a factory or industrial environment that keeps you exposed to chemicals or other harsh elements? Do you wear protective gloves when you clean or are even exposed to dishwashing liquid? Does anyone in your family also suffer from the disease? Did you just recently start taking any prescription medications, or even any herbal supplements?

If such a self check doesn’t yield any satisfactory answers, then it’s time to speak to a doctor. He or she should be able to isolate the cause for your eczema once and for all. You may not want to use prescription creams and topical ointments, but of course you don’t want to be doing any damage to your skin or causing it to become worse either. You deserve relief from this very painful condition, so don’t hesitate to approach your doctor about it.

Common vitamins and over the counter products can give you relief from eczema such as Unsaturated fats, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin B, Aloe and Chamomile.

Unsaturated fats that stay liquid at room temperature such as soybean, wheat germ, sunflower and corn oil have show to greatly improve eczema when applied to the affected area.

Vitamin A and E taken internally and applied to the affected area have been shown to alleviate the systems of eczema.

Dr. R. Patila reported good results with Vitamin B therapy.

Aloe Vera will help rejuvenate and tone skin all over. A naturally cooling gel, the Aloe Vera botanical ingredients work together to stimulate the blood circulation and naturally soften the skin.

Chamomile is used to soothe and re-vitalize the skin.

TriDerma Eczema Fast Healing Cream Reviews

Review by B. Dawson: 5 Eczema Cream

41ShgHCeZ5L. SL75 Eczema Cream**I’m posting this review on my husband’s account, not my own (I actually don’t have one)

I never leave reviews, but this product is working so well that I wanted to let others know how it has helped my son.

He is now a little over 4.5 months old and has had eczema spreading across his forehead and down to his cheeks since he was two months. The pediatrician originally gave us an anti-fungal cream to manage the rash, but there was no effect. At his 4 month well-check, we received a Rx for Alclometasone Dipropianate Cream, USP 0.05%. It worked amazingly well, and his skin was soft and smooth in 4 days. But, the label says that it’s not recommended for children under 1 and the pediatrician was very clear that we not exceed 7 days of use and that we cease use earlier once his skin cleared. His skin remained clear for about a day and a half, but then a small patch of rash appeared on his forehead.

We began using Cetaphil lotioin to moisturize throughout the day and California Baby Calendula Cream, in an attempt to control the inflammation without the use of steroids (several reviews and message board posts mentioned its effectiveness). The combination seemed to slow the spread of the rash, initially, but his face and cheeks were soon covered again (worse than before we used the Rx cream).

We discontinued use of the Calendula cream, thinking it might be too strong and causing irritation. We continued with the Cetaphil, which seemed to provide temporary moisture and relief from the itching, but did nothing to control the rash and required numerous applications throughout the day.

A co-worker informed me that she has been using TriDerma to control her son’s eczema since he was an infant (he’s now 2), and suggested that I give it a try. We have been using TriDerma for 4 days, now. There was little noticeable difference in the first 2 days, but we’ve seen great improvement since then. It doesn’t appear to be working as quickly at the Rx cream, but it is definitely working and appears to be following the same stages of healing as with the Rx cream.

I am so thankful! The rash was beginning to spread to his nose and eyelids, but is now receding, and we are hopeful that his skin will soon clear completely.

Review by Mrs. Alba: 4 Eczema Cream

41ShgHCeZ5L. SL75 Eczema CreamI bought this for my 2 year old daughter who has patches of eczema all over her body. This past winter was especially dry and her skin worsened. She had an especially stubborn patch of eczema in the bend of her elbow that would not heal. We had a daily regime of triple antibiotics and cortisone. We only bathed her a couple times a week and used cetaphil soap to wash her along with aveeno oatmeal in her bathing water-which after we applied aquaphor all over her. Desperate- as the patch in her elbow was getting worse – I saw an ad for this and decided to try it. After 5 days of applying 2 times daily it healed up the patch completely. No weeping or scaling anymore! My only complaint is that it doesn’t come in a bigger tube. But well worth the price as the results were excellent.

Review by Emely M. Iverson: 5 Eczema Cream

416BzgCsiAL. SL75 Eczema CreamI love the Dermarest Eczema Medicated Lotion. I have been using it for about a year or so now, and I am so glad I found it. I have tried everything from aquafor to udderly beautiful cream to gold bond and any other lotion you can think of. This product is the only thing that has come close to helping me. It definitely helps relieve the itching sensation from eczema and it has really really helped my skin look better as well. It is not perfect, but it is so much better than it used to be! I always used to wake up scratching my legs in the middle of the night and would end up bleeding from doing it so often and hard, and now I don’t have that problem anymore! Yay! It is a bit on the spendy side, but it is definitely worth it to me.

Review by Raymond L. Shepard: 5 Eczema Cream

416BzgCsiAL. SL75 Eczema CreamI and my sons have eczema. We have been to the doctors and had prescribed treatments that don’t even come close to what this product was able to do. I short it makes the condition almost non-existent. I apply a small amount to the affected area two times a day and our skin is so clear and soft. I am totally sold on this product.

It is super thick and hard to spread easily, but it pays off!!

Freederm HC – Eczema – Dermatitis – Skin Rash cream Reviews

Review by L. Chiang: 1 Eczema Cream

312J63HYXWL. SL75 Eczema CreamThis cream worked wonders for me after I started using it in January 2007. I am a chronic eczema sufferer – have had it since I was a baby – and have never been able to live without super strength cortisone. Freederm’s combination of the mild (1%) cortisone and anti-microbial (benzalkonium chloride) entirely cleared up all my milder eczema problem areas (face, arms, torso) and significantly improved my severe hand eczema. I was ecstatic. But when reordered, the product that came was completely different – no cortisone, no antimicrobial, totally different base. I admire Freederm’s effort to make a nonmedicated cream. However, this new formulation not only doesn’t work for me, it actually irritates my skin. I am baffled by Freederm’s apparent decision not to offer both versions. And I also feel that it is not truthful for them to post all the glowing testimonials when the testimonials are for an entirely different product.

For fans of the discontinued medicated product, I found a great dermatologist at Stanford who recommends mixing cortisone (the lowest strength that works for you) with antibacterial cream (Bactroban – you need a prescription). Same theory and works as well as the old Freederm medicated cream.

Review by lord of the bees: 1 Eczema Cream

312J63HYXWL. SL75 Eczema CreamMy son developed some mild excema a few months ago and I ordered this cream to try out since it has so many good reviews and seems to work for everyone! The instructions were to put the cream on 3 times a day. I had only done twice on that first day and my sons excema got this burn type reaction. The spots I tried the cream on (cause i only tried a couple of spots first in case it didn’t work) were really red and inflamed and seemed to hurt him more. The other places where i didn’t put the cream remained the same. I stopped using the freederm cream and the “burn” patches cleared up within four-five days.

Mabye the cream works for some people, but if you do try it out make sure test it out on some areas first before applying over your whole problem area. Especially if you are putting this on a child!

One more thing. When I tried to get authorization to return the product they kept telling me that it was an allergic reaction and kept trying to convince be to purchase another of their product. All I wanted was to return the product and get my full refund (which they guarantee within 30 days) Their customer service is very bad. They were rude and acted offended that I wanted to return their product. All in all I did not have a good experience with this company.

Review by Alexis Coxon: 4 Eczema Cream

21Z59Q7D8AL. SL75 Eczema CreamOur son, who’s almost 1 1/2, has patches of eczema on his cheeks and the backs of his knees. We tried a hydrocortisone cream, as his doctor suggested — it worked (temporarily) on his legs but not at all on his face.

I grabbed this cream on a whim while at the store one day. It works like magic! After just a couple of days, my little guy’s cheeks and legs were totally soft and not red or irritated-looking at all. They stay that way, too, as long as we remember to put the cream on every day.

The only reason I’m not giving this five stars is because it does contain parabens, which I like to avoid in the products I use on my son.

Review by J. Bremer: 5 Eczema Cream

21Z59Q7D8AL. SL75 Eczema CreamI was a little skeptical about buying yet another lotion for my son’s infant eczema. He has really dry skin and it breaks out in patches of eczema that can get pretty bad. We tried Vaseline (on the recommendation of my doctor), hydrocortisone cream on the really bad spots, and Aveeno baby lotion. None of them worked as well as this lotion. I apply it within minutes of getting him out of the bathtub and it is amazing…his skin is no longer breaking out and is getting back to baby soft. I can see the difference within an hour of applying it.

The only downside is the price, especially because you have to apply it fairly liberally. Four ounces does not last long for us, but I’ll still be buying it because it is the only thing that works so far!

31NpzTLssML. SL75 Eczema CreamMy 9 month old baby has eczema in one of his cheeks and it was getting worst with the dry winter in WI. It got to a point where it got so dried that it was itchy and my baby started scratching his face until blood will come out. I used hydrocortisone to stop the itching but didnt want to used it for too long. I tried all the moisturizing creams available on drugstores and specialty stores until I found this one. In a couple of days his face was much better. I HIGHLY recommend this product as well as the facial cleanser.

Review by PghYinzer: 3 Eczema Cream

51qHdWePJZL. SL75 Eczema CreamMy son gets horrible eczema on his arms, wrists, legs, and back. He fights me applying anything to it so we end up in a endless cycle of getting it nearly cleared up… then letting it go till it gets awful again. Later, rinse, repeat. The bad part is it gets so raw that when I put anything on it, he yells that it is burning – so what I have found I have to do is use aquaphor for a day and then it is healed enough to use regular lotion. I have had good success with the Curel Anti-Itch.

What I would like is something not as gross as aquaphor (I’m not one of those anti-petroleum people, it’s just so greasy and heavy is all) that I can maybe use for both seriously bad and getting better eczema. People rave about this so I bought some to try…

It’s just all right. The first night I used it, my son said it didn’t burn. The next time I used it, though, he did. Bear in mind my son screams like he’s being boiled in oil when I come his hair, and yet managed to fall into a baseboard heater so hard he dented it without telling me ANYTHING until a day later – so I tend to be skeptical of his reports when things hurt. In other words – he can be a bit dramatic when things aren’t going his way. So who knows.

I LOVE how this smells, and I love that is soaks in fairly well, so it’s not as nasty greasy as the aquaphor. I can use it on his wrists and hands and things that won’t be covered with clothing without worrying he will be sticking to things all day or leaving greasy marks everywhere. But it really doesn’t seem to work as fast or as well as my aquaphor/curel combination. If you’re intent on going natural, this is a good option, but if you’re comfortable being mainstream, I think there are better alternatives.

A lot of over the counter creams would burn and inflame his skin. Then last winter our pediatrician gave us some samples of TripleCream. It didn’t hurt him when we applied it and it helped soothe the eczema patches. What a relief for him and for us. I am stocking up and hoping it has the same miraculous effect this year too.

Eczema: Symptoms and treatment – Part 8

Rosacea After

Eczema or Dermatitis is an allergic condition that affects the skin and is characterized by inflammation. While there are different kinds of Dermatitis, when people say eczema, they mostly refer to Atopic Dermatitis. Atopic means having a lifelong tendency towards allergic conditions such as asthma, hay fever etc. It is most common in children and nearly ten to twenty percent of the world’s population is affected by it in their childhood. Luckily, a large percentage of children find that their eczema disappears as they grow older. Others find the condition recurring throughout their lives.

The most common symptom of eczema is intense itching which leads to rashes when scratched. Eczema usually shows itself in the form of patches that are dry, red, scaly, and thick skinned. Among infants, the inflammation is often found on forehead, cheeks, legs, scalp and neck. In children and adults though, it is often found on the face, neck, insides of knees, elbows and ankles. In fair skinned people the patches appear to be red before they turn brown while in dark skinned people the patches can either turn dark or light

Although the cause of the allergy is unknown it is accepted that eczema is the abnormal response of the body to its immune system. Eczema can be triggered, from among other things, by soap, detergents, changing weather, clothes, jewelry, excessive sweating and even stress. It is hereditary and not contagious.

Even though eczema never fully disappears for people who have it even after growing up, the condition can be controlled with proper treatment. The first thing to do in a treatment for eczema is to stop scratching when the patch itches. To help with that, it is highly recommended to keep the patch of skin moisturized by applying lotions and creams. The most effective time to do that is right after a bath so that the moisture is locked in before the pores close again. Cold compresses also help to relieve the itch. If these don’t help then another option would be to apply nonprescription eczema creams or ointments to reduce the rash and itching.

A pediatrician or dermatologist can easily diagnose eczema and if moisturizing and cold compresses don’t help then they can prescribe stronger medicines for different treatments of eczema. But most of them come with side effects and are not recommended for prolonged use. Typically, doctors would prescribe topical corticosteroids which are quite effective but their misuse can cause harmful side effects such as thinning of skin, formation of dilated blood vessels, infection etc. Now however, doctors are prescribing a new class of drugs called topical immunomodulators or calcineurin inhibitors. They are steroid free treatments and are able to treat eczema without the side effects of corticosteroids. Oral anti asthma medication like Singulair is also prescribed. Even though it is mainly prescribed for asthma, Singulair is prescribed for eczema as well by combining it with other topical medication for effective and safe treatment. However, cases of mood swings and hyperactivity among children who use Singulair have been recorded.

The aim of the treatment is to prevent itching, reduce inflammation and stop the condition from getting worse. Eczema treatments are different and vary depending upon the patient’s individual case. Creams and ointments containing corticosteroids are often prescribed to help reduce the inflammation. For severe eczema cases oral corticosteroids may also be prescribed. And if the affected area becomes infectious then a doctor may also prescribe antibiotics.Eczema is not a life threatening condition. But it has the tendency to make life uncomfortable if not taken proper care of.

Curing eczema in children

May 16th, 2010

Milky Chocolate

There is no cure for eczema; only prevention and treatment. It is estimated that 10 percent to 20 percent of children are affected with eczema; a red and inflamed itchy rash believed to be caused by an overreaction of the immune system to certain environmental triggers. Eczema is not a constant condition but one that comes and goes. And while many children outgrow the condition, others will battle it their entire lives.

When it comes to eczema there is no single treatment that works for all. It can take some experimenting to find what works best for your child. However, there is one treatment leading experts agree on; moisturizing. It is an important step both in treating and preventing eczema. Aquafor and Eucerin are commonly suggested by health care professionals. Moisturize heavily and often. Doing so right after a bath or shower aids in locking the moisture in.

Avoiding known triggers is also important in preventing flare-ups. It may take a little detective work, but pinpointing what causes the eczema in the first place is a huge step in the battle against it. Common culprits include: soaps, dyes, perfumes, rough materials, animal dander and dust mites. Even certain foods can prompt a flare-up.

Other preventative tips include: wearing natural fibers like cotton, avoiding sweating and keeping stress as minimal as possible.

Even with proper prevention, a flare-up is inevitable. Medical professionals usually suggest the least invasive treatments first. Moisturizing is as important in treating as in preventing. Cold compresses can relieve itching, and over-the-counter corticosteroids can treat inflammation. Antihistamines, like Claritin, may be suggested for severe itching.

During major flare-ups there are steroidal and non-steroidal creams that can be prescribed. Both should be used with caution and only according to doctors directions. The commonly prescribed Elidel and Protopic have been under scrutiny. Certain researchers believe they may increase the risk of cancer. And steroidal creams can cause thinning of the skin. These creams should be used in the smallest effective doses and for as short a time as possible.

Phototherapy is another treatment that is becoming more common. Parents will sometimes see an improvement in their children’s eczema after exposure to the sun.

When eczema follows out of childhood into the teen and early adult years, dealing with the condition becomes part of daily routine. Older children need to learn responsibility in dealing with their condition. Knowing how they can prevent a flare-up is especially important. There may not be a cure for eczema, but prevention and effective treatment can make living with it more tolerable.

The Tower of Diaper Creams - 3

Eczema is an inflammatory reaction of the skin caused by physical, chemical or biologic agents. The epidermis is inflammed or damaged by the repeated chemical or physical irritations. It falls under the classification of dermatitis that may be of irritant, non-irritant, allergic, phototoxic and photoallergic types. The type of eczema that arises after exposing to some kind of allergen is called as allergic eczema which is the most common type of eczema.

Eczema results from exposing to contact allergens or irritants. The common causes of irritant eczema are soaps, detergents, scouring compounds, and industrial chemicals. Pre-existing skin disease is the cause of non-irritant eczema. The predisposing factors of eczema include exposing to extremes of heat and cold, frequent contact with soap and water and the presence of any other skin conditions.

Eczema can affect anybody both adult and children alike. They also affect men and women equally since anybody can be allergic or sensitive to anything. It all depends on their own skin conditions. Men are more prone to produce eczematous reaction from the industrial chemicals because men tend to work in industries, while women are exposed to eczematous reaction when they come in contact with laundry or dish washing soaps and detergents.

Eczema begins when the causitive agent contacts the skin. The symptoms of eczema varies from person to person extending from itching to bleeding. The first reaction to eczema includes itching, redness, and burning, followed by edema, papules, vesicles, and oozing. Sooner the vesicles dries up, forms crust and finally peels. If the reaction occurs repeatedly, the person tends to scratch the skin which may lead to thickening of the skin and pigmentation. In course of time it may lead to bacterial infection.

The main aim of treating eczema is to rest the involved skin and protect it from further damage. Treatment for eczema includes,

* Application of bland, unmedicated creams or lotion over the inflammed skin to prevent them from further dryness.

* Application of a cool, wet dressing or Burow’s solution over the vesicles to reduce itching and promote soothing.

* Applying a thin layer of topical corticosteroid in the form of cream or lotion.

* Medicated baths at room temperature may be prescribed for eczema which is over larger area of the body.

* A short course of systemic corticosteroids like prednisone may be advised for 7-10 days for those with severe conditions.

* Antibiotics

Is It Possible To Outgrow Eczema?

April 5th, 2010

DAY 20 - Back to the Doctors

Eczema is a chronic condition characterized by dry, red, swollen and extremely itchy skin. Eczema is not contagious but it is believed to have a hereditary connection. Research has identified the common trait that most of the time atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema, is inherited from one or both of an individual’s parents. If a person has one parent who suffers from eczema, they have a one-in-four chance of developing the condition. If both parents have eczema, the likelihood is increased to one-in-two chances. Most individuals who have two parents who suffer from eczema do indeed develop the skin disorder. Additionally, many people who develop eczema also have a genetic tendency to develop other allergy-related health problems such as hay fever and asthma.

Approximately thirty percent of infants will develop eczema. Luckily, many will outgrow it by the time they reach three to five years of age. In babies, it generally first appears between the ages of four to six months and it begins with the appearance of a red rash that might ooze fluid. It then spreads to the cheeks and the forehead and sometimes continues to the baby’s arms and legs. In the most severe of cases, a baby’s entire body may be covered with the skin disease. When a baby has cradle cap, or infantile seborrhoeic eczema, a great deal of scaling appears on the scalp although it does not itch.

Some infants are not lucky enough to outgrow their eczema; they carry it into their childhood years. For those who are predisposed to develop it for heriditary reasons, but did not do so in their infancy, they have the potential to develop it anytime between the ages of two and four years of age. In typical bouts of childhood eczema, the rash first appears behind the knees, the ankles, in the creases of the elbows and sometimes will even affect the child’s face, neck and ears. It is generally very itchy and subsequently requires a topical steroid cream. Childhood eczema normally disappears sometime between the ages of ten and twelve, although some children continue to suffer from it well into their teenage and adulthood years.

Adult atopic eczema often begins during a person’s twenties. In this case it often continues throughout the majority of a person’s life. It is normally characterized by large spots of itchy, swollen, red, and oozing skin. Adult eczema tends to affect people in the wrists, elbow creases, neck area, behind the knees and the ankles. Sufferers of adult eczema often see an improvement during middle age, particularly in their forties or fifties. Atopic eczema rarely begins in senior citizens. There is another form of eczema that shows itself in older people; it is called varicose eczema. This kind of eczema afflicts the ankles and is, for the most part, a result of poor circulation to the legs.

Despite the fact that many children outgrow their eczema, they commonly have a lifelong tendency to have skin problems. These problems include hand dermatitis; dry skin that chaps and gets easily irritated; skin infections like staph, yeast infections and herpes simplex, like cold sores, and eye problems such as cataracts and eyelid dermatitis.

The Dos and Don’ts of Eczema Treatment

March 28th, 2010

Hemp Buttercream for Hair and Body

Eczema is a chronic skin disease. It is diagnosed when the part of anybodys skin becomes dry, itchy, red, crusty, and thick with small blisters on it. Basically, it is an allergic condition that affects the skin badly. The scientific name of eczema is atopic dermatitis. Though it is not true that there is no cure for this disease of chronic nature, Eczema treatment needs multiple therapies.

The problem with eczema is that the real causes behind this skin disease have not yet been discovered. In order to treat a disease it is necessary to know its cause. Since doctors are not clear about the cause behind eczema, curing it remains difficult. So far, it is found that eczema is caused by just about anything that comes in contact with the skin. Atopic people, who are extra sensitive to skin irritation, easily catch this disease.

Since eczema treatment is difficult and time killing, dermatologists initially aim at controlling itching, lessening the intensity of skin inflammation, clearing the infection, smoothening and removing rough lesions and reducing new lesions. There are various creams and therapies available for eczema treatment that they prescribe.

However, they give equal emphasise on maintaining a strict skin care routine for getting effective result. The aim here is to lessen the irritation and uncomfortable feeling. Cleanliness really works in this regard. Regular bath taking is also highly helpful as it moisturise the skin. It is highly advisable to use moisturisers or emollients after shower.

Along with all that one must do to get effective result from eczema treatment, there are a few things that one should refrain from. To begin with, scratching on the skin is to be avoided totally. Patients and caretakers should be careful about this fact. Then one should have patience to get effective result from eczema treatment as the process may become a little lengthy and boring.
